Trigger Warning: Synchonicity

Yes, that was irony.

It’s odd, but maybe not so odd, the number of posts I have been seeing on social media recently pertaining to the notion of God and the unconscious being one and the same. Specifically the idea that what we call the unconscious (the processes of the psyche we are unconscious of) is, effectually synonymous with God (I’ll be adding a /dess to that from now on).

In regards to depth psychology I can see the similarities. God/dess and the Psyche both have a power over our lives we do not see the workings of. One that can operate as both a divine blessing, or a seemingly wrathful curse.

Mysterious Ways

It is true to say that both move in mysterious ways too.

Also, that both have the potential to destroy us if we do not pay attention to them. Not because they hate us, but because they seek homeostasis – perhaps.

This function, that of destruction, is synonymous with the archetype of the Trickster in Jungian Psychology. That it seeks the resolution of opposites. If you are overly attached to some aspect of your self concept – some idea you are holding onto about yourself or your life at the expense of the truth, then you run the risk of your own destruction as the psyche will not stand for it. The worship of a false idol – or a concept, be it a symbol of power, or God/dess, or an ideology, or a persona – is a dangerous practice. To assume that a construct is above the truth invariably incur a response from the psyche that is indistinct from the expression of what one might perceive as the wrath of some divine power.

The unconscious elements of the psyche are more powerful than the conscious minds attachments to its self concept, or any inflation into an ideology or conceptual construct.

When the consciousness is set in service to the truth, when we accept truth, then the conscious mind, the ego, whose healthy function is to respond to immediate threats and opportunities in the environment, can just get on with that role, rather than trying to micro manage the perceived idea of the individual self’s journey through life.

To do the will of God/dess then is to surrender, in part, to the unfolding of life and the truths that it presents – to the best we can make personal sense of them. This is the same with the psyche. Both acts first require that you trust, that you have faith.

As Within, So Without. As Above, So Below.

It is also important to acknowledge that, as parts of the same universe, that this process, while it is true that it is occurring within us, is also happening in all things.

At one level we are individuals with individual psyches – to abandon this could lead to all sorts of disastrous consequences.

We are also that which we perceive; We are the world. We are parts of a bigger system. As such, the synchonicites that we perceive as uncanny personal events are expressions of that bigger system – of a universal psyche, whose very soul is the mystery of everything.

Psyche and God/dess then, does not just live in the aspects of the personal unconscious, but is in all things as a multi-faceted expression, whose dimensions we can never know in fullness but that we can sense in the truths that we experience.

Living Well

What does this mean in real terms though, what positive effect might such knowledge have on your life?

The truth is, I don’t know.

I am not a prophet of ‘the’ truth, rather a promoter of seeking truth.

In this regard then the act of living – should you wish to explore this dimension of it – is about gaining greater clarity, becoming more conscious, more awake, both to yourself, to others, and the world. It is not about the accumulation of the knowledge of things or processes in themselves, not as such, but rather about about our relationship to it all. To what can be known and also, more importantly, to that which cannot be known; The mystery of life.

To revere the mystery of life is to reconnect with the sacred, and to reconnect with the sacred – with the mystery of it all – is, perhaps, the healthiest context in which to live, not just for us as individuals, but for life.

This is not a statement of fact, but an invitation. If there is truth in it then you will find it for yourself.

Whatever your path, go well.
