You only need to observe people at play, especially children, to get a sense of what it is about.

In general it seems fair to say that at its foundation play is the ability to model experience without having to have that actual experience – in particular, you can explore practically any situation in a way that exposes you to a level of danger, risk or threat that at any time you can step back from.

And that is the key. That when it all ends in tears – and it so often does – you can walk away. Maybe you might have a few grazes ore bruises, or maybe your feelings have been hurt, but you live to play another day. What’s more, you will more than likely have created an opportunity for a lesson.

A Life of Play

Either way you look at it play appears to be a central pillar in the practice of life, not least creativity.

How we use space, how we can use our bodies in that space, how we imagine we can use the resources contained in that space, how we imagine and then play at interacting with others, all these things can function as a bridge to creating change in our lives, be that in ourselves, in our world, or through the relationships that we have with other people.

How much we can integrate this process into life is an interesting question and one that is integrated as a key practice in the Creative Instinct Course. You can find out more about that here.

The following video touches on a few of the basics but more in relation to the environments we live in and how we can get more creative in them.
