In addition to the information shared in the ABOUT section I would like to add a little bit more about my formal approach to therapy.
Individual Therapy
My approach to therapy is holistic, in so far that the distinctions I make between psychodynamic and physiological expressions are theoretical frames designed to help isolate processes and their relationships to one another.
For example: A patient presents with physical symptoms that appear to be the somatisation of a psychological maladaptation. My approach is to assess influencing factors at a biological, sociological, and an environmental level before approaching the psychological. Where there are indicators as to its appropriate introduction I invite the practice of certain low impact exercises from a repertoire of Chi Gong I have learnt over the years. This can help with the regulation of certain physiological systems.
As the physiology regulates, symptoms can subside or increase. The degree to which the patient requires support in their return to a greater degree of homeostatic regulation is where I see my role as a therapist. In the instance described above, that might result in supporting the patient at a psychological level as any maladaptation, having resolved as physiological symptoms, has a potential to express itself in consciousness at a psychological level.
In this way my approach is to respond on a case by case basis to each patient according to their needs over time.
My use of hypnotherapy is sometimes no more complex than comprehending how the language a patient is using is describing the model of their experience. Sometimes it is no more complex than the delivery of suggestions inspired to invite them to shift that model – or the aspect or elements that are no longer serving them. Sometimes the suggestion is delivered through allegory, storytelling in other words. It is rare that I feel the need to use deeper trance state. This will be contingent upon the patients receptivity and the necessity for a deeper level of intervention.
My therapeutic intention is to advocate for the restoration of homeostasis within the mind and body of the patient to the degree that they are willing and ready to engage with that according to their needs as they present them.
Community
When I say that my approach to healing is holistic, that perspective extends into the community and the broader environment too. The foundation to healthy adaptation is accurate relationship – be that to ourselves, others, and/or the world. The prospect of working from a specific location that provides a level of healthcare to the community at an affordable rate is not just about the welfare of the individuals that it serves, it is also an expression of a curative process expressed at a social level. It is healing by the very fact that it exists. That to me is a project worth getting involved with.
